As Haircare Group proudly celebrates 50 years in business, Group Creative Director Peter Beckett recreated our favourite iconic looks from the past five decades of salon styling. The results are groovy, glam, and modernised — ready to wear now, and beyond.
Look 1: The 70s
Starting with the decade where it all began, the 70s. Peter and the team reimagined the iconic blowout that made the one and only Farrah Fawcett a superstar.
Step-by-step
- Working with the bend of the ends and rolling the hair away from the face with a large ceramic round brush, blow the rest of the hair out with Evo Day of Grace to achieve volume and ‘shape memory’.
- Set the hair in pins. When cool, brush it out with a Denman cushion brush.
- Finish with Color Wow Style On Steroids to add texture, and Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray to hold the style in place.
Look 2: The 80s
Taking inspiration from Madonna’s Desperately Seeking Susan look, the 80s was all about texture.
Step-by-step
- To modernise the crimpy/curly texture, start with setting the dry hair with Evo’s Macgyver multi-use mousse and create ‘figures of eight’ wound around foam rods.
- Dry under heat. Once cooled the rods can be released.
- Use Color Wow Style On Steroids to work into the roots to ends for a gritty finish.
- Sweep the hair up on top into a messy bun and add some ribbon or scarves for that iconic 80s bow.
Look 3: The 90s
Pete’s mission for the 90s look was to lean-into the fun as much as possible with iconic zigzags and spikes.
Step-by-step
- Create a deep side zigzag through to the back and secure two sections into two tight, polished ponytails.
- Using Lakme K.Finish Sculptor to achieve hold and polish.
- Wrap the sections into buns and leave the ends out to create the spikes.
- Finish the spikes off with Kaleo Professional Iron, keeping the spikes flat and chic.
- Complete the look by adding Lakme K.Finish Polish Sheen Spray for the ultimate sheen.
Look 4: The 2000s
It’s all about red carpet glam in the naughties, and the finished look screams power, polish, and poise.
Step-by-step
- Directionally blow-dry the sides with a Denman Cushion Brush.
- Smooth the rest of the hair out and work the Kaleo Professional Iron into the hair for extra polish.
- Create a horseshoe section. Underneath the horseshoe section, make a one-inch scalp braid in the centre-back.
- Anchor your sides to this with bobby pins.
- Add texture with Color Wow Style On Steroids and backcomb the top to your desired height.
- Using your Denman Cushion Brush, gently brush your hair straight back to mirror the direction of the sides.
- Finish with Lakme K.Finish Polish.
Generation Now
There’s something for everyone for today’s look, and the style is a little less ‘done’ with soft and lived-in hair.
Step-by-step
- Use the Kaleo Curling Tong and work loose twists to mimic a twisty blow-dry.
TIP: Using the curler gives you more control to create continuity in the curl pattern or irregularity. - Once finished, you can choose your own adventure. For a gritty look, work with evo’s shabangabang, for beachy vibes use evo shag or Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray and for a wet look, use Color Wow Pop and Lock High Gloss Serum.
